Open pit mine doesn’t belong in cottage country, former MP says
The Haliburton County Echo, March 2008

By MARTHA PERKINS

Roger Young lives on one of those cottage roads that seem to never end. A few minutes after turning west off Glamorgan Road you think surely you must have missed his place because no one could live this far into the forest. But no, his directions say keep on going.

So you stop worrying and start to enjoy the drive. Everything is still and peaceful. The sun is still bright on this February afternoon and as it sinks closer to the horizon its brilliance is cut into a thousand slivers by the passing tree trunks. You start to forget the pressures of life and give yourself in to the beauty around you.

By the time the road finally does end at Young’s home on the shores of Little Glamor Lake, you no longer need to ask him why he decided to retire here. Who wouldn’t want to live among such peaceful splendor? ...

Clear Bags News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Garbage: the Solution is Clear in Algonquin Highlands

October 2, 2007, Township of Algonquin Highlands – As of January 1, 2008, clear garbage bags will be mandatory for the disposal of household garbage in the Township of Algonquin Highlands.

This is just one strategy being implemented to help Algonquin Highlands achieve a higher waste diversion rate – that is, the percentage of waste diverted from landfills to recycling, composting and re-use. The Township currently diverts about 50 percent of its waste from the landfill, still below the target rate of 60 percent.

The idea of clear garbage bags isn’t new. It’s used in other areas like Nova Scotia quite successfully. Since switching to clear bags, several municipalities in that province have reported a decrease in waste disposal and significant increase in recycling rates.

Other Haliburton County townships are also making the switch. The Township of Minden Hills is going with clear bags starting November 1, 2007. The Township of Dysart et al passed a bylaw last summer to bring in mandatory clear bags, but has chosen not to enforce it at this time.

The use of clear bags forces people to rethink their garbage. It’s no longer a case of ‘out of sight, out of mind’. Not only will the clear bags allow landfill attendants to safely tell if recyclable materials are being thrown away, it will also help ensure that household hazardous waste material is not being dumped into our landfills.

Although clear bags aren’t mandatory until January 1, 2008, the Township is promoting them now to give people time to get used to them and use up their existing supplies of black and green bags. Several local businesses have partnered with the Township, donating more than 1200 clear garbage bags for the promotion. The bags are available in a variety of sizes, to fit kitchen containers to those extra large garbage cans on wheels. They’re available in one form or another at most grocery, hardware and department stores in the area. Clear coloured bags, such as blue and green, will also be accepted.

For more information about the use of clear bags or a reminder of what and where to recycle, contact the Township of Algonquin Highlands at 705-489-2379 or visit www.algonquinhighlands.ca.
